Caroline Jaya-Ratnam, pianist

Caroline read music at Cambridge holding an Instrumental Award and a Choral Exhibition and playing the violin in the Chamber Orchestra (CUCO). Following her Masters degree she was appointed the Geoffrey Parsons Junior Fellow at the Royal College of Music.

Caroline’s television appearances have included accompanying international opera singers Rolando Villazon, Danielle de Niese and Bryn Terfel on the piano in the Andrew Marr and Alan Titchmarsh Shows. She could also be glimpsed on ITV’s ‘Popstar to Operastar’ playing for Katherine Jenkins and Villazon in their mentor sessions! She has been interviewed and performed five times on BBC Radio 3s ‘InTune’ in addition to recording a CD licensed to Warner Classics with violinist Charlie Siem. She has performed at the Proms in the LSO (Gergiev) and given duo recitals at the Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall as well as accompanying violinists in the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition string finals. She has been the recipient of several national accompanists prizes. She was the featured piano soloist on the soundtrack of the film Wer Liebe Verspricht and also performed a piano concerto which was broadcast live on Radio 3 from the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the ‘Film Music Concert’ presented by Mark Kermode (June ‘12) with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Caroline has been a freelance repetiteur at the English National Opera since 2007 working with conductors such as Ed Gardner and the late Richard Hickox and artists such as John Tomlinson, Phillip Langridge and Willard White. She is a professor on staff at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Caroline sings with Synergy vocals and plays the violin in her spare time.
